What They Are and Why They Matter
Peptides are one of the basic building blocks of life. If you've heard the word but aren't quite sure what it means, this page will walk you through the essentials.
The Simple Definition
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids. Amino acids are small molecules that link together like beads on a string. When you connect a handful of them, you get a peptide. When you connect many of them — often hundreds or thousands — into a long, folded chain, you get a protein.
So the main difference between a peptide and a protein is size. Peptides are the shorter chains; proteins are the long ones. You can think of peptides as small, simple messages and proteins as full books written in the same language.
Peptides Are Everywhere in Your Body
Your body makes peptides all the time, and they do important jobs. Many of them act as signaling molecules, which means they carry instructions from one part of the body to another. They tell cells what to do — when to grow, when to repair, when to release a hormone, or how to respond to stress.
A few familiar examples show how varied these jobs can be. Insulin, which helps control blood sugar, is a peptide. Oxytocin, sometimes called the "bonding" hormone, is a peptide. Some of the chemicals that manage hunger, sleep, and healing are peptides too. Because they're so specific in what they do, the body uses them as precise, targeted messengers.
Because peptides are so specific, researchers are interested in them as a way to target one system without affecting everything else. That precision is a big part of why peptides have become such an active area of study.
How Peptides Are Taken
Peptides are delicate. The digestive system is built to break proteins and peptides down into their building blocks, so swallowing a peptide as a pill often destroys it before it can work. To get around this, peptides are usually delivered in other ways:

Injection under the skin, which puts the peptide directly into the body.

Intranasal drops or sprays, which let certain peptides absorb through the lining of the nose.
The right method depends on the peptide and what it's meant to do.
A Note on Approval and Safety
Not all peptides are approved by the FDA in the United States. Some are well-established and widely prescribed; others have been used for years in other countries but haven't gone through the U.S. approval process; and many are still being studied. This doesn't necessarily mean a peptide is unsafe, but it does mean it's important to know where a given peptide stands, where it's sourced, and how it's prepared.
