WHAT ARE STEM CELLS?

Stem cells are the body’s built-in reservoir for renewal and repair. With age, their number may decline in some tissues, and their ability to function effectively may diminish. This loss of regenerative capacity—known as stem-cell exhaustion—is recognized as one of several hallmarks of aging, not the sole cause of aging.

Stem cells are part of the body’s natural system for maintaining and repairing tissues. Unlike most cells, they can make additional stem cells and, under the right conditions, develop into certain specialized cell types.

Different stem-cell populations help maintain tissues such as blood, skin, muscle and bone. Their number may decline in some tissues with age, but aging also affects how effectively they function and the environment—or “niche”—that regulates them.

Stem cells also communicate with nearby cells by releasing growth factors, cytokines and extracellular vesicles. Exosomes are one type of extracellular vesicle being studied for their role in cell-to-cell communication.

As we age, stem cells may activate less efficiently and become affected by inflammation, DNA damage, mitochondrial dysfunction and cellular senescence. Scientists call the resulting reduction in regenerative capacity stem-cell exhaustion, one of several recognized hallmarks of aging. It is not the sole cause of aging, but it may contribute to slower and less-complete tissue repair over time.

Researchers are studying stem cells, umbilical-cord-derived products and other regenerative biologics for a variety of potential medical applications. Many proposed uses remain investigational. A product described as umbilical-cord-derived is not necessarily a stem-cell product, and its cellular composition depends on how it was collected, processed and manufactured. These products have not been established as safe or effective for many of the conditions for which they are currently marketed, and most are not FDA-approved.

WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH SHOW?

🧠 Cognitive Health & Neurodegenerative Disorders

Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, neurodegenerative disorders and age-related cognitive decline share a common thread: neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and disrupted cellular communication.

MSC-derived exosomes may cross the blood-brain barrier to deliver bioactive molecules targeting these mechanisms, including mitochondrial dysfunction, neuronal apoptosis, and chronic inflammation. Emerging research suggests potential neuroprotective and regenerative effects. International trials are currently ongoing internationally looking at stem cells and exosomes to treat Alzheimer's and Parkinsons. 

🦴 Joint Pain & Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis affect tens of millions and currently have no curative treatment. Intra-articular MSC injections have demonstrated meaningful pain relief and improved joint function in clinical studies. In one small pilot study of 33 Navy SEAL veterans, pain and disability scores improved significantly at 6 months post-infusion. ⚡ Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy from diabetes, chemotherapy, or injury damages nerves outside the brain and spinal cord, causing chronic pain, weakness, and loss of sensation. MSC-derived exosomes contain proteins, microRNA, and messenger RNA that may support nerve regeneration and function. A 2024 review in Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience documented neuroprotective effects across spinal cord injury, optic nerve damage, and peripheral nerve conditions.

💇 Hair Loss

MSC-derived exosomes are showing promise for hair loss such as male pattern baldness, chemotherapy-induced hair loss, and autoimmune hair disorders. A 2025 systematic review across 11 clinical studies found improvements in hair regeneration across all included research, with mechanisms involving reduced follicular inflammation and activation of key pathways governing the hair growth cycle. 🔴 Autoimmune and Neuromuscular Disorders

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are among the most extensively studied regenerative therapies for immune modulation and inflammation control. Early clinical research in autoimmune conditions such as lupus and neuromuscular disorders including ALS has demonstrated encouraging safety profiles and potential benefits in supporting immune balance, reducing inflammatory signaling, and improving quality of life. Note: ALS remains a disease with no curative treatment; these findings are preliminary and exploratory. A physician evaluation is required to assess candidacy.

🌸 Fertility & Ovarian Health

For women facing diminished ovarian reserve, premature ovarian insufficiency, or chemotherapy-related fertility challenges, MSC-derived exosomes are an active area of investigation. A 2024 systematic review confirmed improved follicle number and hormonal profiles in preclinical models, and a 2024 study in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology demonstrated potential protective effects on ovarian function following chemotherapy exposure.
